Letters to and from John Wilson

Brief Description

  1. Letter to John Wilson from his sister, 17 October 1864, as he left Glasgow for New Zealand .
  2. Letter to Mother from John Wilson, 5 April 1865, from Auckland. "I have just returned from an expedition in the bush. The first night we encamped in a wood, we fixed the tent [2 ground sheets], cut a lot of ferns to lie on, lit a fire and kept it blazing all night no want of firewood here. We toasted our bacon ate a biscuit drank as much water as we liked, then popped into bed after having a good smoke (the best thing for keeping away the mosquitoes) got up about 3 am, put a lot more wood on the fire to give us a good heat and then had a sound sleep until daybreak."
  3. Letter to Mother from John Wilson, 28 April 1865, saying that his first job was at a smith's shop working from 6 am to 6 pm then working in the firewood and coal business.
  4. Letter to Mother from John Wilson, 6 April 1886, at which time he was living with Mr Graham and family at Ellerslie when he mentioned he likes living in the country best. "I like to be free and easy, don't need to mind whether you have a collar coat or vest on."
  5. Letter to brother, sister, nephews and nieces from John Wilson, 30 July 1866, from Lambhill, Waiuku telling them he had been down to Otago with a lot of sheep. Also he married Miss Maggie Horne late of Glasgow. "Her mother was a Graham one of the Possil Grahams and cousin of one of the Grahams of lambhill."
  6. Two letters from Jno Wilson, 1880 and 1881, at Grahamstown Thames to his mother thanking her for books, clothes, knives and a gold chain sent out to his family. He says, "We are all in our usual the young ones growing like brackens."
