George was born in 1858 and came to Cambridge about 1884 when he married Agnes Shortt. They had two daughters.
George was a travelling salesman for 20 years, opened a book and stationery shop and by 1904 had become the local undertaker, working from his home 'Hinemoa' in Alpha Street.

He served as the Cambridge representative on the Waikato Hospital Board for over 20 years and was Library chairman from 1894 to 1910. He was an Anglican churchwarden, an Honorary Member of the Duke of Cambridge Lodge and vice president of the Orphans' Club.
He was on the Borough Council from 1903 and served as Mayor from 1910 to 1913.

Agnes died in 1912 and George then married Mrs Katie Parry. George died in 1923 with his son in law James T Douce taking over as undertaker.
