Born in Glasgow about1829, John married Margaret Glass. They had two children and went to Australia about 1861. They arrived in New Zealand in 1865 and John became an officer in the Bay of Plenty Cavalry 1865-1875 and surveyor for the government around the Waikato area.

John was a well known railway engineer on the New Plymouth-Waitara and Dunedin-Oamaru lines and came to Cambridge in 1880. He was the first mayor for Cambridge from 1886 to 1887.
