Mervyn was our first Mayor born in Cambridge - and the youngest.
He was the son of Thomas and Jane Wells born 1882 at 'Oakleigh' in Empire Street.
He started his career as a clerk and took over Thos Wells Ltd on the death of his father in 1910.
Mervyn married Mabel Beale in December 1911 and they had four children.

He was on the Cambridge Borough Council from 1909 being Mayor from 1913 to 1917 at age 33. World War One was in progress.

Mervyn later went on to be a Director of the Cambridge Dairy Co-op, secretary to the Waikato Hunt and chairman of the Cambridge Power Board from 1920 to 1953. He was on the St Andrew's Vestry and the directorate of FAC after selling the store to them. He died in 1962.
