John's wife was Catherine Elizabeth and their daughter was Jennie.
John was on the first Cambridge Borough Council in 1886 and a local Justice of the Peace from 1890 to 1900.
He was Mayor 1889 to 1891 and resigned from the Council 20 August 1895 saying, "Herewith I beg to tender my resignation of the office of Borough Councillor. Increasing infirmities, as I grow older, tend to put me more and more on the shelf, and I must yield the field to younger and stronger men. You will please express to His Worship the Mayor, and to my fellow councillors, my grateful appreciation of the kindness and consideration I have uniformly received from them and their predecessors during the eight years that I have had the honour to be in the council."
John died on 26 July 1903 aged 64.
