James was born in 1844 and married Eliza (who was aged 16 years) in 1871.
He was a blacksmith in Cambridge with his smithy situated near the Triangle corner in Victoria Street.
In 1877 he was at the meeting for the first Cambridge Band and also became a member of the Cambridge Cavalry Band.

He served as a councillor from 1887 to 1891 and was Mayor 1891 to 1892. He served on the local school committee, was a Cemetery Trustee and became a Justice of the Peace in 1892.

On the premature birth (and death) of their 11th child in 1895, Eliza died of double pneumonia. James then married Isabella Hart and 10 years later, in 1905, he died after having his arm amputated because of blood poisoning.
