Edward was born 23 September 1871. He became a journalist and, with his wife Margaret, arrived in Cambridge from Gisborne in 1901. He started a stationery and florist shop (later Haworths) in Victoria Street and had a taste of Council from 1903 to 1907. He was the first secretary of the Fire Brigade.

He and Margaret had their home 'Tregarthen' built in Williams Street in 1904 and brought up two children in Cambridge.

Edward became president of the Band, worked on the committee of the YMCA and was an Anglican Vestryman. He was Mayor from 1917 to 1921 and first president for Plunket in Cambridge. They left Cambridge in 1921 for Epsom.
